Laure Van Brempt & Vera Roggli are the two designers behind the Antwerp based textile design studio WIESI WILL. The WIESI WILL studio is a laboratory for material-minded people who enjoy profound research, keeping in mind the fusion of aesthetics and functionality. „We like to plant seeds on the borders between different disciplines, and to grow our universe by playing and experimenting.“ The outcome of their research can result in a sweater or a carpet, a curtain or an installation.

Laure Van Brempt & Vera Roggli sono le due designer dietro WIESI WILL, studio di textile design di Anversa. WIESI WILL è uno studio-laboratorio orientato alla ricerca profonda, in particolare quella incentrata sui materiali, mai perdendo di vista l’equilibrio tra estetica e funzionalità. "Ci piace piantare semi ai confini tra le diverse discipline, e far crescere il nostro universo giocando e sperimentando". Il risultato della loro ricerca può prendere la forma di un maglione o un tappeto, una tenda o un'installazione.

LZ: How did you develop your passion for textiles?
WW: After a master in illustration, Laure decided to study textile design, to deepen his knowledge on textures, composition and color. After finishing her master, she worked as a knitwear & print designer for Christian Wijnants, fashion designer from Antwerp. This is where Vera and Laure's journey crossed. Vera is originally from Arnhem, the Netherlands, and after the Bachelor in Fashion design she started working as a creative assistant at Christian Wijnants. Working at Wijnants was an important step. During this period we discovered our love for slow production and craftsmanship, dealing with handmade projects: crochet, knitting or dyeing. We soon discovered that we did not want to limit ourselves only to the design of clothing, but also to explore the use of textiles in interiors, architecture and art. That`s when we started WIESI WILL.

LZ: Come nasce e si sviluppa il vostro interesse per il tessuto?
WW: Dopo un master in illustrazione, Laure ha deciso di studiare design tessile, per approfondire la sua conoscenza sulle textures, sulla composizione e sul colore. Dopo aver finito il master, ha lavorato come designer di maglieria e stampa per Christian Wijnants, fashion designer di Anversa. È qui che il percorso di Vera e Laure si è incrociato. Vera è originaria di Arnhem, in Olanda, e dopo il Bachelor in Fashion design e ha iniziato a lavorare come assistente creativo presso Christian Wijnants.
Lavorare da Wijnants è stato un passo importante. Durante questo periodo abbiamo scoperto il nostro amore per la produzione artigianale, lenta e di alta qualità, occupandoci di progetti realizzati a mano: uncinetto, maglia o tintura. Ben presto abbiamo scoperto che non volevamo limitarci solo alla progettazione di capi d'abbigliamento, ma anche esplorare l'uso del tessile negli interni, nell'architettura e nell'arte. È stato allora che l’attività di WIESI WILL è iniziata.

LZ: You collaborate with professionals from other creative fields, such as musicians, architects and other fashion designers. How does textile dialogue and integrate with different arts and practices? Does your approach change within different creative fields?
WW: In our little manifesto that we wrote for ourselves when starting WIESI WILL, one of the first points is the importance of collaboration. We strongly believe in the exchange with creators, creatives and designers from different backgrounds and fields.
For our project Couture Sonore we were approached by Antwerp based music collective BESIDES. They literally wanted to interweave textile within their music and performance. So we started a dialogue and worked together in their music studio to see the reaction of the sound on different materials and fabrics. We realized how interesting it is, to hear the vision of other creatives, in this case musicians, on our own field, textile design. It led to many amusing moments and new ideas!
Even if we have a clear identity and visual language, our approach is still very open and playful with every new project we do. It changes according to the creative field , we do not follow rigid rules or design principles, but we believe in dialogue with the people we collaborate with. When you work with an assignment you work within a certain frame. It is interesting how you can research and move around the limits that come along with this frame. This way of working allows us to move our own boundaries and keep surprising ourselves.

LZ: Collaborate con professionisti di altri settori creativi, come musicisti, architetti e altri fashion designer. In che modo il tessile dialoga e si integra con le diverse arti e pratiche? Il vostro approccio cambia a seconda del contesto?
WW: Nel breve manifesto che abbiamo scritto per noi stesse quando abbiamo iniziato WIESI WILL, uno dei primi punti è costituito dall'importanza della collaborazione. Crediamo fortemente nello scambio con creativi e designer di diversa provenienza e ambiti. Per il progetto “Couture Sonore” siamo stati contattati dal collettivo musicale di Anversa BESIDES. Volevano letteralmente intrecciare il tessuto all'interno della loro musica e della loro performance. Così abbiamo iniziato un dialogo e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare insieme nel loro studio musicale per vedere la reazione del suono su materiali e tessuti diversi. Abbiamo scoperto che è molto interessante sentire la visione dei musicisti sul textile design…questo ha portato a molti momenti divertenti e a nuove idee. Anche se abbiamo un’ identità e un linguaggio visivo chiari, il nostro approccio è ancora molto aperto e giocoso con ogni nuovo progetto che facciamo. Cambia a seconda dei settori creativi, non seguiamo regole rigide o principi di design, ma crediamo nel dialogo con le persone del gruppo di lavoro. Quando si lavora con un incarico si lavora in una certa cornice. È interessante come si possa ricercare e superare i limiti che si presentano in questo quadro. Questo modo di lavorare ci permette di spostare i nostri confini e di continuare a sorprenderci.

LZ: Which are the compromises of a young design studio? Do you balance experimental projects with commercial ones?
WW: Next to our own studio we both working freelance for other brands, mostly in the field of knitwear design. These commissioned works give us a more or less stable income and allows us to be experimental and completely free when developing our own projects.
In addition to that, Laure is teaching at the textile department of the Art Academy in Gent, KASK, and Vera is currently following a Master Course in Textiles, to deepen her knowledge in textiles.

LZ: Quali sono i compromessi che dovete affrontare come studio di design emergente? Oltre ai progetti sperimentali, lavorate anche a progetti commerciali?
WW: Oltre ad avere il nostro studio, lavoriamo entrambe come libere professioniste per altri marchi, principalmente nel design di maglieria. Questi lavori su commissione ci garantiscono un’entrata più o meno stabile e ci permettono di essere sperimentali e completamente liberi durante lo sviluppo dei nostri progetti.
Inoltre, Laure insegna presso il dipartimento tessile dell'Accademia d'arte di Gand, KASK, e Vera attualmente sta seguendo un Master in tessile, per approfondire le sue conoscenze nel settore tessile.
