Oltre il giardino (Beyond the garden) explores the complex relationship between human beings, the environment and the language with which we communicate, questioning what can be understood as ‘natural place’ and bringing out micro and macro-narratives.

The artist works on the ambiguity of the concept of landscape, on the perception of the environment around us, and on the blurred boundary between natural and man-made context.

what’s your idea of natural place?

Starting from this question, addressed to a heterogeneous audience, of different ages, professions and nationalities, Claudia Losi developed the artworks titled Oltre il giardino (Beyond the Garden), the last chapter of a twenty-year-long research project focusing on that interweaving of meaning, perception and memory that humans deploy when looking at the world.

Always applying a rigorous methodology typical of a sociological approach, Claudia Losi undertook a survey on a sample of about four hundred people – of different ages, backgrounds and geographical origins – who through a call for participation and a series of seminars respond to this question.
Thus, starting from the perceptive and semantic ambiguity that characterizes the term natural, the artist translates the answers obtained, redrawn and woven into a single graphic narrative, onto a large tapestry approximately eighteen meters long.
In a synchronic and non-linear narrative, on the large tapestry we find a free flow of images and words that intersect without defining either as a beginning or an end, without inserting a forwards or backwards, a top or bottom, a right or left that might together guide the sense of our reading.

A TEXTILE SCROLL OF IMAGES AND WORDS

Created between 2021 and 2022 with the consultancy of Lottozero and now part of the collection of the Rocca Roveresca in Senigallia, the Jacquard tapestry takes shape in a installation designed by Claudia Losi to surround the view in a unique and continuous flow, in which images and words overlap and alternate freely.
Drawing from the same reservoir of textual and visual content, Claudia Losi has also realized a textile book, which unfolds in scroll form the same narrative flow of thoughts, memories and perceptions, making use of digital embroidery and sewing techniques.
